About
In March of 2012, amidst increasing injustices towards women and their reproductive rights, Kirsten Wright founded WARRR: Women Against Restricting Reproductive Rights.
“When questioned about the choice of the word ‘WARRR’, after being told ‘I understand why you would be in attack mode’, I could not help but realize the severity of the situation at hand. Not only is there a war on women, but even some of the most socially conscious people do not grasp the gaping inequalities that are ever-growing in our society.
I am not “in attack mode”. I’m in “take action mode”. And the war that I am a part of is not one of violence. It’s one of oppression, degradation, and ignorance. It’s a war in which the people (mostly men in the religious right) who have legislative influence are trying to take away my rights and the rights of all women. This war was brought upon the women of America. There is indeed a war against women. And as a woman, I am prepared to fight back. I will not let these people “invade” my reproductive system and my right to do what I please with it, without a fight. If I ever have a daughter, I want to be able to say to her, that I tried. I fought for her right to education, access to contraception, the right to end a pregnancy by her decision. This whole entire subject goes far beyond the reach of just reproduction. This war tells a story of the inequality that is present, and the desire of certain groups of people to take us back in time to when women were second class citizens. I can not, in good conscience, sit back and watch what unfolds. I will not be a traitor to my own gender.
It is my goal to educate, provide resources, and speak out against those fighting to restrict the rights of women. ” – Kirsten Wright, Founder of WARRR
