Why Republicans Punishing a Rep for Saying “Vagina” Matters

Michigan Republicans’ reaction to the simple word “vagina” was more than just a quirky one-off story that would anger reasonable Americans and provide fodder for late-night talk show monologues. Rather, the aversion to a woman in a position of power daring to utter the word “vagina” during a debate on legislation meant to curb abortion rights is symbolic of one of the festering abscesses (yes, there are more than one) infecting the modern GOP: a destructive obsession with turning back the clock to the 1950s on the role of women in society.

Mississippi Rep. Says He Has No Problem With Women Dying From Coat Hanger Abortions (VIDEO)

Mississippi recently passed a law in an effort to force the last remaining abortion clinic in the state to close, which could force women to sometimes critically dangerous alternatives if they are desperate to end a pregnancy. Back ally or coat hanger abortions are life threatening self-induced abortions that have resulted in the deaths of thousands of women. But one Mississippi Republican doesn’t care about those lives.

Arizona Bill Bans Abortion After 18 Weeks, Forces Women To Undergo Transvaginal Ultrasounds

Make no mistake about it. Republicans want to force women to stay pregnant, and they’re willing to sanction rape and violate Supreme Court rulings to do it. Senate Republicans in Arizona have passed a bill that bans abortion after 18 weeks of pregnancy and forces women to endure transvaginal ultrasounds before having an abortion.

Missouri Contraception Law: Legislators Approve Bill Allowing Refusal Of Abortion Care

The Republican-controlled Missouri House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a bill Wednesday afternoon that would allow the denial of certain medical services to women for religious reasons, following an emotional debate where the majority leader was forced to deny he compared women to farm animals.
