I would like to thank you, 50 something year old male, for lecturing me at the pharmacy. I was not aware that picking up my prescription birth control would incite you to speak of “young ladies nowadays”. I was not aware that my personal business and what I choose to put in my body is any of your concern. I would also like to thank you for giving me this handy dandy pamphlet on the atrocious act of consuming birth control to induce an abortion. Wow! You’ve really taught me. Thank you sir, I am eternally grateful.

Nothing says “well-researched scientific evidence to refute what your personal doctor has prescribed for you” like a hand-written pamphlet.

What PRENDA Would Mean to Women

No woman should ever be scrutinized or interrogated by her doctor, but this is exactly what would happen if this bill becomes law. Given the risks to providers, even the decision to find out the sex of a child during a wanted pregnancy may become suspect.

Mississippi recently passed a law in an effort to force the last remaining abortion clinic in the state to close, which could force women to sometimes critically dangerous alternatives if they are desperate to end a pregnancy. Back ally or coat hanger abortions are life threatening self-induced abortions that have resulted in the deaths of thousands of women. But one Mississippi Republican doesn’t care about those lives.

An Upside to the ‘War on Women’?

Women’s issues have been all over the media lately, and not for all the right reasons. Birth control, abortion rights, the Rush Limbaugh Sandra Fluke ‘slut’ comment controversy, Hilary Rosen’s comments on Ann Romney never working a day in her life — it’s really enough to make your head spin. (At least we have one more woman on Forbes’ list of billionaires, thanks to Spanx inventor Sara Blakely, which had The Story Exchange staff cheering.)

I overheard some young women talking about these issues on the train the other day and that got me thinking… Is there an upside to the so-called “war on women”? Could it be mobilizing a new generation of women leaders? I decided to contact some prominent women representing the interests of other women to find out. Here’s what they told me.

916 Anti-Women Bills Introduced By The GOP Since March 2011

The GOP would have you believe there’s no war on women after they started the war on women. The first opportunity they had to deflect attention away was when Hilary Rosen, off the top of her head, made the comment that Ann Romney never worked a day in her life. We all know what she meant but it gave the right ammunition to turn it into the war on moms. Just so we’re clear, there is no war on moms. That’s just plain malarkey and everyone, including Republicans know it.

On Saturday, April 28, 2012, women and men across the United States will converge in state capitols and cities, including New York City, to give voice against the oppression of women’s access to health care and women’s rights. Politicians in Washington and in legislatures across the country have been trying, and in some cases succeeding, to legislate away the rights that women have fought for and won over 40 years ago. Over the last several months alone, nearly 1000 bills have been proposed by the GOP targeting women’s rights. This isn’t only a war on women but an attack on all our rights.

Woman Against Women – Kimberly Yee

As point person for the right of right, right wing Arizona Center for Public Policy Ms. Yee sponsored the horrific HB 2838, which would have banned abortions after twenty weeks. Due to the testimony and overwhelming response (phone calls, emails, petitions) against the bill from women across the country, it was pulled from the Arizona House Health Committee. The fact that Ms. Yee chose to then employ a “strike all amendment,” a political sleigh of hand to resurrect the bill, speaks to the evil genius of the willing and ambitious puppet’s puppeteers. The point of a “strike all,” is to completely remake a bill under the shadow of darkness without the pesky inconvenience of committee hearings and public scrutiny.

Tennessee Bill Defines Kissing And Holding Hands As Gateways To Sexual Activity, Bans Teaching Contraception In Sex Ed

Republicans are going even further by introducing language in a sex education bill that would define kissing and holding hands as gateways to sexual activity. The bill also bans sex education teachers from promoting contraception.

Searching for “Feminism” on Youtube

I decided to work on our Youtube Channel this evening, by creating a playlist dedicated to the topic of feminism; however, I did not find what I was expecting. Perhaps it was a bit naive of me to expect to find an equal amount of pro-feminism and anti-feminism media. The videos that spoke about feminism in the way in which I conceive the movement were scattered sparsely throughout the search results. I scanned through the results to find many hateful anti-feminist videos. While I completely respect the opinions of others and their right to share said opinions, I have to say that I was disappointed to find so many negative viewpoints.

Perhaps these individuals perceive feminism to be represented by a group of hairy, angry, men-hating lesbians who want to act violently to overcome “the Man”. If this is true, I am truly saddened by the lack of education these individuals possess.

By no means do I wish to discount the opinions of others, and in fact I admire the passion and conviction that they have for their beliefs. I merely wish to express my own belief that education is crucial to understanding. I believe that it is my responsibility to educate myself on the views of others, whether I agree or not. And I also consider it the responsibility of WARRR to help provide information and education, not only related to feminism, but also to women’s issues as a whole. This includes, but is not limited to, reproductive rights, equality, women’s health, wages disparities, political activism, gender and transgender issues, sex education, and more.

Whether you stand with us or against us, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this post and any other posts on our blog, and taking the time to educate yourself on our views.

Arizona Abortion Bill: Legislators Pass Three Bills, Including One That Redefines When Life Begins

Arizona lawmakers gave final passage to three anti-abortion bills Tuesday afternoon, including one that declares pregnancies in the state begin two weeks before conception.

OK seriously… 2 weeks before conception? Arizona, what the heck are you doing?
